ICE Out of Alexandria
Community defense
ICE Out of Alexandria is a community coalition made up of Alexandria residents and community organizations who organize to get ICE out of their city. They are rooted in the belief that "when ICE comes for one of us, they come for us all...It is up to Alexandria, all of Alexandria, to come together and defend our residents." Strategies include packing city council meetings, demanding transparency and accountability from city officials, and organizing with allied organizations. Organizers worked to pressure city council to cut $200,000 from the Sheriff's office general fund and continues to challenge law enforcements collaboration, both official and unofficial, with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
Real world examples
Bring together folks from across your town, city, county, or whatever your jurisdiction might be, this can be concerned individuals or allied organizations. Take time to figure out who the decision-makers are in your community, or do some power-mapping to see the relationships that allow ICE to enforce in you area. You can research if your area has a 287g agreement (gives some federal immigration enforcement powers to local and state law police) and work to pressue your officials to terminate that agreement.
